Over the years I have been many different people to children: teacher, friend, mom, mom mom, babysitter and afterschool provider. A couple years back I got to work with third graders at an afterschool program. Being the oldest group at this particular school district and leaning on the edge of adolescence; these kids were the big bad pre-teens of the program.
The daily practice at this program was the group would arrive at the end of school, sit at their designated tables and we would take attendance. This was the time of the day when the kids would socialize, do homework, you know quiet table time; ok, they were talking but they were not running around.
On this one day I was taking attendance and I overheard a few of the boys talking about girls. They got on the subject of IT. You know "Do you think you can get IT?" or "I heard she gives IT." Now I am laughing to myself as they are talking and wondering what a bunch of 8 and 9 year oldS know about IT?!
When I got the chance, I jumped into their conversation. "What is IT?" I asked. First thing they all did was turn various shades of red and one(you know the one that thinks he is the coolest) said,"Awwwwwww Ms. Joy you know what IT is."
"Nu-uh" I said shaking my head.
"Yes you do," they all chimed in. The looks on their red little faces were priceless. They thought I was some kinds of crazy. How could this old lady not know what IT is? I was dying to laugh but of course I had to keep it going. I put on this totally innocent face on my mug and said, "I do not know what IT is."
All of a sudden the smart boy pipes in,"Come on, Ms Joy! you know what IT is...haven't you ever watched GENERAL HOSPITAL?" Well I died. He had me rolling on the floor. So now we know where they are getting their sex education: soap operas. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Kid-ism? What is a Kid-ism? I look at it as the infinite wisdoms that kids impart upon us everyday that cause a giggle, a chuckle and an out and out laugh. You have experienced them, repeated them and remembered them when you needed a little pick me up. In the immortal words of the late great Art Linkletter,"Kids say the darndest things!"
Moms or mom moms; Dads or pop pops are loaded down with them: potty stories, telephone conversations, Sponge Bob quips...whatever they are we keep them close to our heart. They warm us and make us smile. That is what this blog is all about. I wanted to share some of my stories with you; share a piece of my sunshine and love with you. And I hope you, too, will feel free to share yours with me.

My 8yr-old sisters Abby and Beka were playing dress-up with their cousin Jana(9) and Ally(7). Ally was telling the other girls which princesses they got to be in the game. "You're Snow White, you're Cinderella, you're Jasmine, and I'M the Virgin Queen!" Abby asks her, "what does virgin mean?" To which, Ally replied, "I don't know! Beautiful or something!"
